Abstract

This study investigated the adoption and impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by examining how emerging AI technologies transformed the operational landscape of these businesses. SMEs are the backbone of most economies and the integration of AI has the potential to redefine SME strategies across financial, organizational and technological dimensions. Through a documentary research method, this study aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of the enablers, barriers and outcomes that shape AI adoption in SMEs. This study built a conceptual framework that has nine variables organized across three roles. As enablers for adoption, technological readiness, organizational culture and leadership, skilled workforce availability, and data management and quality determined how well-positioned an SME was to adopt AI. As barriers for AI adoption, financial constraints, economic and social resistance, and ethical and privacy concerns limited how far that adoption could go. As outcomes, this study found that SMEs who navigated these enablers and barriers successfully translated that adoption into stronger customer engagement and satisfaction and a more durable competitive advantage, particularly through predictive analytics and personalized service delivery. Overall, this study concluded that AI adoption presents immense potential for SMEs by enabling growth and adaptability and made them more competitive against MNCs. However, achieving successful AI integration requires SMEs to navigate resource constraints, skill gaps and ethical considerations, making strategic planning essential to harnessing AI’s benefits and fostering resilience in a competitive digital landscape that will define business survivability going forward.
