Abstract

Ammonia is environmentally friendly, having zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) and zero GWP (Global Warming Potential). Therefore, does not cause pollution to the environment. It also has a low price and high efficiency compared to other refrigerants, so it is often used in the icehouse and the freezer room industry. However, ammonia is classified as a B2L substance, with a “B” level indicating that ammonia is toxic. When inhaled, it can be life mortality if not handled. Currently, Thailand has a Ministerial Regulation prescription of safety measures regarding refrigeration systems that uses ammonia as a refrigerant in factories B.E. 2554 In Article 10, Section 5, it is stated that “The Factory Entrepreneur using cooling systems, must have an engineer who has received a license according to law, registered with the Department of Industrial Works for verifying and test the cooling system to ensure safety at least once a year.” Therefore, this is a presentation of in-depth investigation and testing of refrigeration equipment using ammonia as refrigerant in factories including compressors, cooling towers, and shell and tube condensers. The measured results showed that the coefficient of performance (COP) of four compressors was higher than the limit of the machine, with values are 6.62, 6.44, 6.72 and 6.52 respectively. The heat transfer effectiveness of the cooling tower was 44.50 %.

Keywords: Ammonia, environmentally friendly, refrigerants and cooling system.
