[fruitful_tab title=”1. The Factors That Affect the Quality of Life of Provincial Officials in the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare in Thailand”]

Abstract

This research aims to study the level of the quality of life of provincial officials in the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare in Thailand in order to identify those factors that affect their quality of life and to suggest guidelines for the promotion and design of a plan to upgrade their quality of life so as to make it more effective.  The sample group for this study consisted of 277 provincial officials in the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare.  Questionnaires were used as a tool for collecting information in terms of quantity.  The statistics used for testing the research assumption were Frequency Value and Percentage in order to find the relation between deviations through the use of Ki Square Value and to look for the direction of those relations through the use of Coefficient Value and the Gamma Joint-Relations at
a significant statistical level of .05.

The study found that the quality of life of 152 provincial officials in the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare in Thailand or 54.9% of the sampling population was at a high level.  The factors that were related to the level of the quality of life of the provincial officials in the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare in Thailand were their incomes, position, sufficient and fair remuneration, a good, safe and hygienic environment, progress and security in their profession, the chance to develop their work competency, fair and equal work administration and the balance between the professional and private life.

Suggestions derived from the study are as follows. In terms of income, to help alleviate the burden in spending, the authorities should provide them with more welfare services, for example, offering free rides to and from work at various spots close to where they live.  In terms of position, the authorities should offer the chance of promoting these officials to higher positions. In terms of sufficient and fair remuneration, the authorities should abide by the system of good governance in assessing their work performance. The remuneration they receive should be sufficient for them to live on according to social standards. In terms of a good, safe and hygienic environment, the authorities should make them understand and be aware of the benefits of the 5-S activities in order to create a good image of the Office and for a better quality of life.  In terms of progress and security in the profession, the authorities should give an opportunity to officials to change their work line and to learn to work in different areas.  In terms of developing work competency, the authorities should provide an opportunity for officials and support them in developing their knowledge on a regular basis. In terms of fair and equal administration, the administrators should give the chance to officials at all levels to consult with them, to listen to them and to help them to solve problems willingly. In terms of the balance between the professional and private life, the authorities should clearly specify the work plan in a systematic way, assigning adequate manpower to the amount of work and this work should be appropriately and evenly disseminated.

Suggestions for further research are that contrastive studies about the level of the quality of life of other groups should be conducted, for example, government employees and permanent employees.  A study of the same subject should be repeated, at intervals of approximately 5-10 years, to find out what direction the level of the quality of life of the officials is heading towards.  This will benefit the development of the officials’ quality of life.

Data analysis included frequency, percent, average (x ̅) and standard deviation (S.D.), applied Pearson’s correlation coefficient to understand forms of relationship, and then compared values from those statistics by testing hypotheses with T-test and F-test. If the difference of particular values is significant, the Scheffé’s method would be performed to compare each two of those values.
Results of this research shows that the majority of correspondents were male, aged between 31-35 years old, completed an undergraduate education, and had work experience of between 1-5 years.
