Abstract

With global digitalization and increasing competitive pressures, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China must rapidly accelerate their digital transformation while also improving their innovation capabilities. This research explored: (1) the connections between design thinking, ambidexterity in digital transformation (exploitative and exploratory), and the innovation performance of innovative SMEs in Guangxi, China; (2) how the institutional environment’s regulatory, normative, and cognitive components moderate the relationship between design thinking and organizational innovation performance; and (3) the creation of a design thinking practice model intended to enhance the innovation performance of innovative SMEs.

A mixed-methods approach was utilized, incorporating quantitative analysis of 429 valid survey responses alongside qualitative data collected from interviews with 16 key informants. The results showed that design thinking positively affected SMEs’ innovation performance both directly and indirectly through digital transformation ambidexterity. Moreover, the normative and cognitive dimensions of the institutional environment influenced the relationship between design thinking and organizational innovation performance. This study highlights the role of design thinking and digital transformation in driving small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) innovation, offering new insights into organizational innovation management. Furthermore, it compiled practical advice for SMEs to strengthen innovation capabilities and secure a competitive edge through strategic design thinking and digital transformation.
