Abstract
The effect of internal and external armed conflict on Nigeria’s food security is a factor in the country’s economic growth and development, as well as in Nigeria’s gastronomy diplomacy. As insecurity and tourism are an unlikely blend, the food crisis in Nigeria is a hindrance to showcasing Nigeria’s rich gastronomic prowess, which is one of Nigeria’s soft power tools. Soft power diplomacy involves subtle coercion to alter preferences and choices and promote local alternatives in the national interest. International politics is tilting towards more soft than hard power to achieve its aims and objectives. However, the lingering internal and external crisis and its effect on food insecurity hinder the full exploration of the soft power of Nigeria’s gastronomy diplomacy. Apart from several other soft power tools which Nigeria can maximize, food, which has been used to promote culture and tourism as an integral part of human existence, is elevated in this work as a principal soft power asset. Nigeria’s rich gastronomy is certainly a notable strength as well as its diverse culture and untapped natural resources. The findings of this research, arising from the application of qualitative research methodology, specifically using documentary research, collected from relevant research reports, academic books and papers, as well as official documents and information from relevant ministries and international organizations, reveal the strength, beauty and opportunities of Nigeria’s gastronomy as well as its cultural diversity and rich landscape, as a unique opportunity to shift from a dependency on oil to a fully diversified economy. Nigeria’s rich cuisine is therefore presented as a powerful tool for soft power diplomacy, inspiring and attracting the world.
