Abstract
The paced trend of globalization in decades has brought about major changes in how multinational corporations (MNCs) handle their supply chains. With the growing interconnectedness of markets and advancements in technology along with open trade policies, MNCs have been able to extend their reach sourcing materials and delivering products on a worldwide scale.
The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of globalization on supply chain management of multinational corporations (MNCs), with a particular focus on sustainability and ethical considerations. It aimed to identify the key challenges and risks that globalization introduces to the management of global supply chains, including issues related to operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and socioenvironmental responsibilities. Furthermore, the study sought to explore effective strategies that MNCs employ to enhance supply chain resilience and optimize overall performance in a highly interconnected and competitive global market.
This study adopted a documentary research design, using qualitative analysis of secondary data from academic journals, industry reports, and credible publications to explore globalization’s impact on MNC supply chains. Data were selected for relevance to current challenges, then analyzed using theories including Resource-Based View (RBV) and Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) to identify key themes such as risk management, technological integration, and regulatory compliance. Triangulation was applied to validate findings, leading to insights aimed at enhancing resilience, efficiency, and sustainability in global supply chains.
The study finds that globalization impacts MNC supply chains by increasing both efficiency opportunities and challenges like risk and regulatory demands. To improve resilience, MNCs can diversify suppliers, use advanced tracking and analytics, and ensure regulatory compliance. Balancing in-house operations with strategic outsourcing optimizes costs and performance, enhancing sustainability and competitiveness globally. From a managerial perspective, these findings suggest that executives of MNCs must adopt a proactive and strategic approach to supply chain management in a globalized environment. Managers are encouraged to prioritize supplier diversification and the integration of advanced tracking and analytics systems to anticipate and mitigate risks. Ensuring strict compliance with international regulations and ethical standards is crucial for maintaining corporate reputation and operational continuity. Additionally, carefully balancing in-house capabilities with strategic outsourcing can optimize both costs and performance, while embedding sustainability initiatives strengthens competitive advantage and long-term resilience in global markets.
This study contributes to academic literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of how globalization affects supply chain management in multinational corporations, with an emphasis on sustainability and ethical considerations. It extends existing research by identifying specific challenges and risks that arise from operating in a globalized market and by highlighting practical strategies for enhancing supply chain resilience and performance. Furthermore, the study bridges theoretical frameworks with real-world managerial practices, offering insights that can inform future research on optimizing global supply chains while maintaining ethical and sustainable standards.
