Abstract
This research entitled “Citizens’ Political Participation through Social Media in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province” aimed to: (1) examine how politicians in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province use social media for political communication; and (2) investigate citizens’ political participation through social media in the area. This study employed a qualitative research approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations. The key informants consisted of five local politicians and ten citizens residing in Bang Phli District who had experience in following political information, expressing opinions, or participating in political activities through social media, totaling fifteen participants. The informants were selected using purposive sampling and snowball sampling techniques. A semi-structured interview guide was employed as the primary research instrument. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis and interpretative analysis.
The findings revealed that social media has become a strategic political communication tool for political parties and local politicians in Bang Phli District. It is utilised to disseminate policies, build political images, receive public feedback, and strengthen communication between politicians and citizens. Social media functions not only as a public relations channel but also as a two-way communication platform that enhances political awareness and connects online communication with offline political activities.
Regarding citizens’ political participation, the study found various forms of engagement, including following political news, reacting to political content, sharing information, expressing opinions, engaging in online discussions, and following the performance of politicians and political parties. However, most participation remained at the levels of information consumption and symbolic interaction rather than direct involvement in policy-making or structural political change. Factors influencing the level of political participation included political interest, awareness of public issues, digital literacy, age, confidence in expressing opinions, communication climate within online spaces, and concerns about political conflicts and public criticism.
In conclusion, social media plays a significant role in expanding political communication spaces and encouraging citizens’ political participation in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province. Nevertheless, such participation remains limited in terms of depth, continuity, and influence on political decision-making processes. Therefore, government agencies, political parties, and relevant organizations should promote constructive social media use, strengthen digital literacy, and create safe online environments to enhance meaningful and sustainable political participation among citizens.
