Tackling the Issue of Human Trafficking: Insights from Nigeria

Abstract

Human trafficking remains a serious issue and transnational crime in Nigeria. This study evaluated the issue of human trafficking in Nigeria with emphasis on the root causes of human trafficking, the role of governmental, non-governmental organizations and the various strategies for prevention, protection and prosecution in Nigeria. The study utilized an explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design using questionnaires and interviews for data collection. A total of 385 questionnaires were distributed across selected communities in six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, while 368 were retrieved and collected for analysis. Interviews were conducted with 5 people from different institutions and organizations in the anti-trafficking field in Nigeria. The results indicate that poverty, unemployment, corruption and weak law enforcement are the major causes and factors contributing to human trafficking in Nigeria. Findings indicate that governmental and non-governmental organizations contribute to public awareness campaigns, victim rehabilitation and prosecution of traffickers although these efforts are hampered by inadequate findings. The results further indicated that increased public awareness, stronger law enforcement and sustainable rehabilitation programs are necessary for effective prevention and prosecution against human trafficking in Nigeria. The study concludes that despite various existing legal frameworks, human trafficking persists and continues to exist due to socio economic inequalities and poor implementation of anti-trafficking policies.
