The Role of Management Information Systems in Maritime Logistics Management in Myanmar

Abstract

This study investigates the role of Management Information Systems (MIS) in enhancing maritime logistics management in Myanmar, with a particular focus on the Port EDI System implemented at Yangon Port. The research explores how such information systems can improve port operations, streamline logistics processes, and foster economic growth in Myanmar, a country strategically positioned in Asia’s growing trade and economic landscape. The study examines the benefits of the Port EDI System at Yangon Port, drawing comparisons with leading maritime nations like Japan, Korea, and Singapore, which have successfully integrated similar systems into their logistics management frameworks. By analyzing secondary data from sources including government reports, academic journals, books, and surveys conducted by agencies like the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the current state of Myanmar’s maritime logistics industry and the potential of MIS to address operational challenges. It also emphasizes the importance of adopting a National Single Window (NSW) System to integrate various information systems, facilitating smoother trade operations across the country’s ports. The study contributes valuable insights to the field of maritime logistics, highlighting the potential benefits of MIS for improving operational efficiency, reducing corruption, enhancing maritime security, and boosting Myanmar’s competitiveness in global trade.
