Abstract

This study explores the factors influencing high school students’ independent subject selection in China’s new college entrance examination system, with a focus on Kunming Middle School. The research background highlights the significant reform in China’s educational system, aiming to foster student-centric learning and diversify academic paths. The problem addressed is the challenges and complexities arising from this reform, particularly in understanding the factors affecting students’ subject choices. The objectives of this study were: 1) To analyze the factors influencing high school students’ independent subject selection from the dimension of personal factors.
2) To analyze the factors affecting high school students’ independent subject selection from the dimension of school factors. 3) To analyze the factors affecting high school students’ independent subject selection from the dimension of family factors. 4) To analyze the factors affecting high school students’ independent subject selection from the dimension of social factors.
The study was grounded in the Selective Education Theory, emphasizing personalized education paths. It adopted the quantitative research method, utilizing a questionnaire survey to gather data from students at Kunming Middle School. A total of 1,772 questionnaires were distributed in this survey, and 1,772 questionnaires were returned. Invalid questionnaires were eliminated, and valid questionnaires were uniformly numbered. Finally, 1,457 valid questionnaires were counted.
The findings indicate that 1) Students’ selection of subjects is mainly based on personal interests and confidence, with interest being the primary motivator and difficulty a key deterrent. 2) School influences, including college major requirements and career guidance, significantly impact their choices. 3) Parental education and occupation variably affect students’ decisions, with higher parental education leaning towards school factors. 4) Social factors, especially job prospects and social status of occupations, also shape students’ subject selections.
The study concludes that while students mainly rely on personal preferences for subject selection, external factors of school guidance and family background also impact their decisions. It suggests improvements in career education and resource allocation in schools to support students in making informed choices.
